Sustainable Resources for Bio-Based Industrial Processing
Biomass Collection from Natural Post-Fire Pine Regeneration Areas
Short Introductive summary
This work aims to the mobilization of new biomass resources from systematic early thinnings on natural post-fire pine regeneration areas while reducing the risk of forest fires in the Spanish region of Castrocontrigo (León). For this, a forest harvester-baler system (Biobaler WB55) was used in a trial over 5 ha of an 8 year old pinewood (Pinus pinaster). This equipment, powered by a 154 kW tractor (Valtra T194D), cuts and crushes the scrub through a brush cutter, sending the material to a baler chamber that packs it as round bales with a diameter of 1.2 meters. It is the first time that demonstrative field harvesting trials are carried out with the described technology in post-fire pine regeneration areas, which allows to determine the biomass yields and productivity of this biomass collection equipment, evaluate the quality of the work performed, and the technical limits under which the profitability and operation of this equipment is located. The results can contribute to improve the profitability of the wild fire prevention clearings as total costs are reduced by biomass incomes, and therefore, the clearing work can be extended to a larger number of hectares.
