Holistic Methodology to Guide the Evolution of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Technologies

Short Introductive summary

Several Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) have been certified. However, most current technologies for SAF production from lignocellulosic materials result in high minimum fuel selling prices (MFSP) of over $2,000/Mg. There is a need to develop methodologies to guide the evolution of current SAF production technologies towards economically viable pathways. We proposed a methodology that uses a simple technology-agnostic production cost correlation as a screening tool and “idealized” technological cases based on how oxygen is removed. Our methodology uses minimizing carbon abatement costs as the technology evolution target.
