Effects of Common Tar Components on Syngas Biomethanation
Short Introductive summary
Pyro-gasification allows the conversion of biomass to renewable energy, in the form of syngas. Syngas can then be upgraded to methane through biomethanation, allowing to take advantage of the important natural gas storage and transport infrastructure already existing in Europe. However, biomass gasification generates undesired by-products, such as tar, that could be inhibitory for the microorganisms performing biomethanation. Therefore, for the first time, this study assesses the impact of tar on a microbial consortium adapted for syngas biomethanation.
