The Role of Biomass in the Decarbonization Society: Proposal of Hiroshima Scenario

Short Introductive summary

The role of biomass in the decarbonization society is discussed by taking other renewable energies into account. Carbon dioxide emission in Japan was taken as the model. For the net zero carbon society, cheap renewable electricity should be provided with photovoltaic and wind turbines. However, three uses of energy, coke for steel making, jet fuel, and plastic, cannot be supplied by electricity. The common characteristic of these energy uses is the need for carbon sources. Considering the high cost of direct air capture, biomass should be used as a carbon source. The amount of carbon in the Japanese available biomass was estimated to show the amount is sufficient for carbon needed for the three non-electricity needs.
