Bioenergy in the Brazilian media: the shaping of Social Perception and Acceptance
Short Introductive summary
Bioenergy is one of the leading solutions for decarbonisation in the short, medium, and long term, considering its versatility and low carbon footprint. Biomass is a source corresponding to 36% of the Brazilian energy matrix and is able to reach a large participation in the energy transition scenarios for net zero in 2050. However, despite the positive impact of bioenergy projects, the installation and success of energy projects are also affected by social perception, which plays a vital role in implementing energy projects and end uses. In this context, this paper aims to assess and analyse the social perception of bioenergy using Social Psychology and machine learning to understand and predict society’s views and feelings towards bioenergy through media analysis. To fulfil the objective of this study, we investigated the third most-read newspaper in the country, analysing the sentiments expressed by the media coverage from 2018 to 2023. The results demonstrate trends to be positive, concerned, resistant or ambiguous about bioenergy depending upon the stakeholder that the media reports on. This will enable better communication and impulse of the carbon neutrality agenda in Brazil.
