Effect of the Co Digestion of Olive Mill Waste Water and Landfill Leachate on Medium Chain Fatty Acids Production

Short Introductive summary

Co-digestion is the biological treatment of two or more biodegradable substrates to enhance biogas production. This type of treatment is a feasible alternative for the management of substrates with a high content of organic matter, improving nutrient balance in the mixture, and diluting the concentration of toxic compounds. Therefore, olive mill wastewater (OMWW) and municipal solid waste landfill leachate are toxic effluents for the environment, characterized by high organic matter, alcohol, and phenolic compounds that inhibit acetogenesis and methanogenesis. Consequently, they can be tested as co-substrates for producing biobased products and bioenergy (medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and hydrogen). Then, the main aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of the co-digestion process of municipal solid waste landfill leachate and OMWW with different ratios for increasing the production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and hydrogen in batch reactors.
