Conversion of Biomass into Green Fuel Intermediate via the Largest Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis Plant in Finland: A Case Study on the Production and Properties of Pyrolysis Oil from Pine Wood’s Residues

Short Introductive summary

Fast pyrolysis research started about two decades ago at Valmet, and the first commercial fast pyrolysis plant was commissioned in 2013. The research and development continued at Valmet to pilot and commercialize an improved pyrolysis process. In the enhanced process, catalysts are used in a second reactor after the actual pyrolysis reactor, aiming to manufacture oil products that can be upgraded to fuels and chemicals in refineries. The development work has been carried out in several consecutive stages, from laboratory to pilot scales. This work shows the results of the catalytic fast pyrolysis trial products performed in Finland’s world’s largest pilot plant with a 400kg/h feeding rate. The results have proven the catalytic fast pyrolysis concept viable to produce a stable, high calorific, and upgraded pyrolysis oil with low oxygen content and acidity. Compared to fast pyrolysis oil, the upgraded oil is easier to adopt and further upgrade because of its improved properties.
