Efficient Cleaning of CO2 Side Streams from Anaerobic Digestion for Carbon Material Use

Short Introductive summary

On the way to net zero, CO2 will be one of the three carbon material sources next to biomass feedstock and recycled carbon feedstock. Different CO2 sources and the state-of-the-art separation technologies are discussed based on the CO2 availability in that stream. We discuss general flowsheet design and focus on the CO2 cleaning step with activated carbon to remove sulphur, acidic and basic components and trace metals which would otherwise poison the catalysts or microorganisms used in the downstream hydrocarbon build-up processes. At the example of CO2 from anaerobic digestion, we illustrate our design and operating experience in reliably cleaning this CO2 side product stream by means of activated carbon in our mobile filters to achieve food-grade quality. We show that with our mobile filter concept we can establish a fully closed-loop cleaning solution since we reactivate the spent activated carbon with near zero carbon process losses.
