Hansenula Polymorpha Yeast Driven Fermentation of Pure Sugars for Alcohols Production

Short Introductive summary

Bio-alcohols could be used for both industrial and energy applications. However, the production of bio-alcohols depends on the sugars present in the biomass hydrolysate and the performance of the yeast during fermentation. For research advancement, the present work investigated the different inoculum doses of wild type H. polymorpha strain (DSM 70277) to ferment pure sugars (glucose, fructose, and xylose) for the co-production of methanol, ethanol, and butanol. H. polymorpha appears to grow better and produce more alcohols in fructose than in glucose or xylose, under the conditions studied. The initial concentration of inoculum seems to have an influence on the rate of growth of the yeast, growing much faster at low concentrations of inoculum. The growth rate in xylose is comparatively much lower. H. polymorpha is a methylotrophic yeast (consumes methanol), which led to very low methanol yield and quick appearance and consumption (within 6 h with low inoculum dose) specifically in case of xylose. The butanol yield increases with the increase in fermentation time in the three sugars. Impact of fermentation time for alcohols production was observed to be a dominant factor only in cas
