European Biogases Development

Short Introductive summary

Renewable gases, including biogases, are central to achieving carbon-neutrality in the EU by 2050 and helping reduce energy dependency. The production of renewable energies and biofuels has greatly increased in the EU, in stark contrast to all other domestic energy sources (except nuclear), which have been steadily declining. Since 2016, energy production from renewable sources has been the biggest domestic supplier of energy to the EU. This unequivocally demonstrates that Europe’s greatest resource for reducing reliance on outside energy providers is a combination of all renewable energy sources, including biogases. Biogases can directly substitute on the rise natural gas imports, being it flexible as readily stored and deployed using existing gas infrastructure and technologies. Production of biogases is growing and, by 2050, it can be increased at least fivefold, going up to 167 bcm. This potential can be delivered using sustainable feedstocks.
