Technological Developments for Biomethane and Biohydrogen Production and Offtake

Short Introductive summary

Biomethane and biohydrogen are amongst the pillars of REPowerEU, the European Commission’s Communication and plan that building on the Fit for 55 package of proposals and completing the actions on energy security of supply and storage puts forward an additional set of actions to save energy, diversify supplies, quickly substitute fossil fuels by accelerating Europe’s clean energy transition, combine investments and reforms. This unparalleled policy push in scaling down EU’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and tackling climate change is an opportunity to further develop and deploy a conversion process such as anaerobic digestion, which has proven to be reliable, secure, efficient and scalable, but where optimization margin still exists. In the context of the EU project GreenMeUp, which aims at providing a basis for policy-makers and stakeholders to develop more informed renewable energy policies and country-tailored market uptake measures, in order to improve and complement existing biomethane policy in Europe, the technological developments along the value chain for biogas, bioCH4 and bioH2 production have been reviewed. The analysis performed covers new and improved technolo
