Investigation of Pectin Deficiency in Modulating the Bioflavonoid Profile of Orange Processing Waste: A Sustainable Valorization of Industrial Waste

Short Introductive summary

Orange processing waste generated by the processing of oranges, as well as other citrus fruits, is a major source of pectin in the market nowadays. The residues generated during the pectin extraction process often contain many phytochemicals, including flavonoids. Cautiously, the scientific literature lacks comprehensive insight into the chemical composition of these citrus wastes. This study investigated the composition of orange processing wastes generated by the pectin industry (OPW1, OPW2 and OPW3), and also by juice production (OPW4), designated as orange processing waste - OPW. We use state-of-the-art techniques such as liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) and feature-based molecular network (FBMN), to annotate flavonoids chemical profile.

Symone Costa de Castro has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Federal Institute of Bahia and a master's in organic chemistry from the Federal University of West Bahia, Brazil. Currently is a Ph.D. student in sciences at the University of Campinas, Brazil.
