Biorefinery platforms and approaches for bio-based chemicals and polymers

Sequential Extractions and Selective Modifications of Organosolv Lignin from Sitka Spruce

Short Introductive summary

The emergence of biorefineries has expanded our means to tackle climate change. As the race for decarbonization spreads, we yet struggle to meet the demand of bio-based chemicals. Of the three major biomass components (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose), lignin is the most challenging to valorise. Due to its high intrinsic complexity, as well as being easily degraded during the biomass extraction process, lignin is usually burnt for heat generation. This, however, makes up about 20-30% wt. of a tree that could have been converted to fine chemicals. As such, this project sought to find a way to efficiently valorise the lignin.
