Production Of Crambe Abyssinica In Marginal Soils With The Addition Of Biochar And Mineral Slag – A Contribution To The Circular Economy

Short Introductive summary

The present work evaluated a sustainable perspective for the use of two wastes of different origins, one being biochar produced from wheat straw and pine bark, and the other being category 1 and 2 mineral slag (10% rich in phosphorus). These byproducts were incorporated into pots to evaluate the effects on the production of a crop with potential for biodiesel production, Crambe abyssinica. The biochar was produced at 300ºC and the slag was produced by incineration at 1000ºC, with their composition being interesting for reuse as biofertilizers on marginal lands. Different amounts of biochar (B) were tested in the soils, 1%, 5% and 10%, by comparing to a control soil. Slag (S) was also added at a rate of 10g/m2, which corresponded to 0.075% in the soil, and its effect was compared with soils without slag. In the pot trials, it was found that there were no significant negative effects on the productivity of the oilseed under study, except in the pots with the highest addition of biochar (10%). In terms of seed production (with an average yield of 12.3 g/m2), there was an increase in productivity with the addition of slag and biochar.
