Bioenergy Systems With or Without Carbon Dioxide Removal? A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment

Short Introductive summary

In order to evaluate and compare the climate impacts of bioenergy carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted, comparing the climate performance of three different systems: biochar, BECCS and combined heat and power (CHP) without CDR. The LCA modelling technique developed computed results with respect to different functional units, background systems and parametric uncertainty. The results for this study suggest that CDR systems are in general preferable over the CHP without CDR, from a climate mitigation perspective. However, the ranking of the systems changes depending on calculation set-up, suggesting that the best-performing system depends on choice of functional unit, the background system context and specific foreground data.
