Sustainable biomass resources with improved soils

Mapping Contaminated Sites in Europe for Low ILUC Biomass Production

Short Introductive summary

The aim of this presentation is to show results on how to map areas of sites in the EU that are contaminated and need cleaning or stabilisation. From this mapped area we derive a sub-selection of sites that may be suitable for bioremediation through the cultivation of biofuel crops. The results of the analysis presented reveals location, surface area of the mappable contaminated sites in Europe, and, where possible the prevalent soil properties and type of contaminants present. The mapped information will also be used in scenario studies within the GOLD project. Here, the biomass production and uptake of contaminants as established in ongoing experiments is used to assess the phytoremediation potential, i.e. the amounts of pollutants that potentially can be removed from the site.
