Unveiling the True Value: Exploring Costs and Benefits of Sustainable Certification Schemes in the Biopolyethylene Value Chain
Short Introductive summary
The aim of this research is to explore the Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) of sustainability certification schemes for biobased products and highlight the significance of incorporating the externalities (environmental and social costs and benefits), which are often neglected in current CBA calculations and are difficult to monetize. The study thereby proposes an approach to enhance CBA by incorporating external costs and benefits into the evaluation of sustainable certification schemes. For this purpose, a methodology for conducting the CBA was proposed following a review of literature on their application to sustainability certifications and on methods for internalizing externalities with the purpose of integrating them into the cost and benefit assessment. The developed methodology is applied to a case of the Biopolyethylene value chain. This is used to illustrate the challenges and opportunities associated with application of CBA for certification within this specific sector, shedding light on the broader implications for biobased industries.
