Torrefaction Pretreatment for Selective Fractionation of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Effective Valorization of its Components

Short Introductive summary

In Europe, agricultural practices generate 139 million tonnes of residues, such as husks, chaffs, or bagasse, annually. Agricultural lignocellulosic waste is an abundant resource that can be utilized as a carbon-neutral and renewable resource to mitigate environmental concerns and climate change while promoting sustainability and waste management. France and the European Union have policies and initiatives like the Climate and Energy Plan, European Green Deal, Renewable Energy Directive, and United Nations Paris Climate Agreement (2015) to promote the sustainable use of lignocellulosic biomass waste for renewable energy production. However, factors like inefficient treatment technologies, expensive pretreatment methods, post-processing of biomass, and incomplete valorization of lignocellulosic biomass leading to bad process economics decrease the market share of biomass-derived products. The central question that comes into mind is how to enhance the competency of agricultural lignocellulosic wastes to be effectively incorporated into developing a carbon-neutral industry.
