Small Scale Gasification Plant for Stand-Alone Application and Low Environmental Impact

Short Introductive summary

This work concerns the activity related to the operation of a fixed bed downdraft gasification plant as a key component of an autonomous hybrid demonstrator for stand-alone application to be powered by residual biomass and solar energy. Among the objectives to be achieved is also the minimization of side streams for disposal. The gasification plant, in fact, in its basic configuration produces an aqueous condensate stream with organic loading, including tar. To minimize the environmental impact related to the production of such stream a myco-remediation approach was evaluated by using fungal pellets (FPs) and fungus-biochar composite pellets (FBPs). For the preparation of these latter pellets the biochar produced at the gasification plant itself was adopted, with a view to improving the sustainability and the cycle closure of the process. An overview of the achieved results is presented and discussed.

Donatella Barisano is senior researcher at Enea Trisaia Research Center. She works in the field of biomass valorization for bioenergy and biofuels production. Her present activity is focused on biomass gasification and use of catalysts and sorbents for gas upgrading and conversion.
