Short Introductive summary

Gasification plants of small size can be a useful technology for energy valorization of locally available residual biomass, as well as non-hazardous carbon-containing process residues. In this sense, the technology based on reactor of downdraft fixed bed configuration can be a suitable option allowing to combine sustainability and low environmental impact with closure of process cycles. To increase the operation reactor flexibility, a prototype downdraft gasifier was implemented to also allow the feeding of feedstocks with high ash content ( 20%-wt), as for instance wastepaper wrappings, textile waste, dried sewage sludge. Different low-grade feedstocks were then analyzed for physicochemical characterization, with a focus on ash composition and thermal behavior. To guide possible design implementations to facilitate the discharge of ash from the reactor, real agglomerates were collected and subjected to nonstandard techniques to evaluate their physical and mechanical characteristics. Finally, the study of the problem of ash melting was complemented by an evaluation based on available literature to consider the options of additive addition to offset the risk the risk of occurrence.

Donatella Barisano is senior researcher at Enea Trisaia Research Center. She works in the field of biomass valorization for bioenergy and biofuels production. Her present activity is focused on biomass gasification and use of catalysts and sorbents for gas upgrading and conversion.
