A Circular Approach Applied to Industrial Wood Packaging Waste: Gasification and Char Addition in Polymer Composites
Short Introductive summary
This work presents an innovative circular strategy for the thorough exploitation of wood packaging waste based on polygenerative gasification for the production of thermal energy and char to be used as pigment/filler in plastics (as substitute of fossil fuel-based carbon black). Gasification tests were conducted in a commercial rising co-current stationary fluidized bed gasifier operating with wood pellets. Optimal operating conditions were identified using standard pellets (PS) and then applied to pellets from wood packaging waste (PW). The collected char was characterized and added (1 wt.%) to a low density polyethylene resin matrix to investigate its suitability as filler/pigment. Gasification of PW showed similar results to PS. The main differences were related to the properties of the chars. Char addition in polymers, in general, decreased stress and strain at break and melt flow index (MFI) compared to pristine polymer. The main difference among the two char-based composites was due to the different wettability of the surface of the filler with the polymer leading, in case of PW-char, to a weaker interaction between the filler and the polymer matrix.
