The Need of Harmonized Policies for Biofuels and Biomaterials

Short Introductive summary

Many roadmaps have been published for chemicals and plastics, showing that biobased feedstock has a role to play in defossilising the industry. However, when it comes to policy, materials are way behind energy. While biofuels are incentivised with quotas under the EU Renewable Energy Directive, biobased plastics have a modest 1% share of the plastics market owing to the lack of legislative incentives to their adoption. This paper will highlight this distortion and propose a pathway towards a level playing field between biobased plastics and biofuels.
