N2O Emissions in Bio-Based Energy Carbon Footprint: Mapping Biomass Cultivation Emissions with pyGNOC

Short Introductive summary

N2O is the third anthropogenic greenhouse gas in terms of global warming over 100 years. Those N2O emissions mainly concerns bio-based products and bioenergy. At the scale of the carbon footprint of bioenergy, it represents a major source of their carbon footprint. In some cases, N2O emissions have the potential to compromise or limit the climate benefits in comparison to their fossil counterpart. The objective of this work is to provide, based on the best available science dealing with N-related GHG emissions, an explicit mapping of N2O emissions from biomass cultivation for bio-based energy. This knowledge is of interest to limit as much as possible the carbon footprint of bio-based energy, biofuels, and potentially bio-sourced material relevant for a sustainable transition.
