Solving the Problems of Bioplastics in Anaerobic Digestion Via Hydrothermal Pre-Treatments

Short Introductive summary

Bioplastic items can cause problems to anaerobic digestors, due to their large size and slow degradation rates. Our work shows that a hydrothermal pre-treatment can be effective in breaking these products, creating a liquid slurry rich in their monomers and oligomers. If this slurry is sent to anaerobic digestion, the production of biogas is much more abundant and fast. Moreover, the technique can be effective in separating bioplastics from traditional plastics, which are often erroneously discarded together with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.
