Short Introductive summary

Within the Horizon Europe project Micro-Bio-CHP (No. 101083409, 10/2022 – 09/2025) a new, highly efficient micro-scale biomass CHP system based on a fixed-bed updraft gasifier and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is developed. In combination with a state-of-the-art PV module as well as with appropriate heat and electricity storage solutions this system shall allow for energy autonomy of multi-family buildings in terms of space heating, domestic hot water and electricity supply throughout the whole year. Thereby, the wood pellet-fed CHP plant shall be operated during seasons with space heating demand to supply heat and power. The PV system adds on additional electricity during this time and takes over electricity and domestic hot water supply, the latter via a power to heat device, during the remaining time. An appropriately dimensioned heat puffer and a smart puffer loading strategy should facilitate continuous operation of the CHP unit with rare shutdowns and bi-directional charging of electric vehicles shall allow storage of excess electricity to provide full day consumption and additionally also supply surplus electricity for e-mobility.
