Land Use Change and Root Extraction: Sustainable Biomass or Waste?

Short Introductive summary

In the management of tree plantations, the removal of stumps is the last operation to be carried out before working the land and putting it back under cultivation. The poor marketability of the stumps is related to the traditionally used high extraction costs and the relatively poor quality of the fuel. Contamination of wood material with soil particles can jeopardise any possibility of commercialisation. Therefore, in parallel with accessible extraction systems, low-cost storage solutions should be identified to provide a marketable fuel. This would represent an interesting opportunity to enhance the value of this biomass resource, giving farmers the opportunity to balance the cost of extraction.
