Mitigation of High-Temperature Corrosion During Thermal Processing of Biomass Rich in Chlorine
Short Introductive summary
Presented study aims to evaluate the performance of aluminosilicate additives (kaolin, halloysite, and bentonite) on the mitigation of high-temperature corrosion under biomass ash deposits. Two types of chlorine-rich biomass: chicken litter and cattle manure are investigated. They represent animal-origin biomass, which may contain much more chlorine than plant-origin biomass, making it unattractive for thermal processing. Therefore, a remedy for chlorine-related problems of animal-origin biomass must be found and aluminosilicate additives seem a promising solution. The research presented in this study covers the influence of aluminosilicate additives on chlorine content in animal-origin biomass ashes and the change in Ash Fusion Temperatures (AFTs), which are the most vital indicators of corrosion risk. According to the authors’ best knowledge, no data regarding the application of aluminosilicate additives to the combustion of animal litter is available in the literature thus it is a new and unexplored topic. The application of aluminosilicates may also improve the ash characteristics in terms of their future disposal, for example as sorbents.
