Recovery of energy and nutrients from urban and industrial residues

Sustainable Energy Generation through Thermo-Chemical Processes of Solid Waste from the ’La Pradera’ Sanitary Landfill, Department of Antioquia, Colombia.

Short Introductive summary

The solid waste management system in the metropolitan area of Valle de Aburrá and other municipalities in Antioquia, Colombia, is confronted with a critical challenge due to the impending closure of the ’La Pradera’ sanitary landfill and associated issues in waste handling practices. To address this predicament, this paper proposes the implementation of a thermo-chemical process, specifically waste incineration, as a solution to generate electricity. By utilizing 70% of the daily 3200 tons of potential waste received at the landfill, the project aims to achieve sustainable electrical energy production, material recovery, and a reduction in carbon emissions. The anticipated impact encompasses substantial contributions to the monthly energy needs in the region, coupled with significant financial revenues from electricity sales, by-product marketing, and carbon credits. Despite an initial investment requirement, the project demonstrates promising financial projections and offers positive environmental outcomes, making it a potentially transformative solution to the ongoing solid waste management crisis in the region.
