HTL biocrude Pre-treatment Prior to Hydrotreating: Preliminary Results

Short Introductive summary

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is taking the lead as a biomass conversion technology able to convert virtually any kind of organic feedstock into biocrude, an energy-rich intermediate that can be utilized for the production of drop-in biofuels, especially sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However, HTL biocrudes can be very difficult to process in hydrotreating units due to their very high content of solids and inorganics, causing catalyst poisoning. Achieving long-time stable operations, a fundamental requirement for commercial operations, requires that the inorganic content is reduced to the minimum, possibly down to ppm levels. This work aims at developing a pre-treatment strategy for biocrude from manure and wheat straw co-liquefaction, involving mixture separation with solvents and filter-centrifugation, followed by acid washing, adsorption and in-situ catalytic hydrodemetallization (HDM). Major attention was given to mass and carbon balances, in order to determine the losses of each operation.
