Synthetic fuels from biomass and hydrogen

Comparative Study on Electrochemical and Thermochemical Pathways for H2 Production

Short Introductive summary

Electrochemical processes for hydrogen production, microbial electrolysis cells and proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells, have yields ranging from 15 to 98 g H2/kgbiomass, whereas thermochemical processes such as gasification have yields ranging from 40 to 190 g H2/kg biomass, with steam gasification having the highest yields. These production yields make thermochemical processing a very appealing and advantageous alternative for biomass conversion for renewable gas production. The levelized costs of hydrogen vary between 5 and 9.1 €/kg depending on the production source. This makes thermal steam gasification a viable alternative for producing hydrogen from biomass, as the yields are higher.
