Opportunities of Public Policies Aiming Electricity Generation from Biogas Produced in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs)

Short Introductive summary

Biogas is a gaseous and fuel mixture composed mainly of methane, carbon dioxide and other gases, resulting from the biological activity of organic waste in an anaerobic environment, that is, without the presence of oxygen. Therefore, biogas can be recovered in WWTPs through anaerobic sewage treatment. As it is mainly composed of greenhouse gases (GHG), and also because it can provide the electricity generation in a decentralized manner (DG), it is interesting to understand the possibilities of its recovery for such purpose. Therefore, this work analyzed the opportunities in terms of public policies for the State of São Paulo, Brazil, related to biogas-based electricity generation in WWTPs. Hence, the research was based on a review of the biogas potential in WWTPs in the state, on the mapping of national and state instruments to promote this type of strategy and on the main opportunities in terms of public policies related to biogas production and use.
