Phytoremediation of Soil Contaminated with Mining Waste in La Planta, Argentina
Short Introductive summary
Mining waste impact on the environment causing a decrease in the ecosystem services due to the high content of metals and low pH value. Consequently, phytoremediation is a technology that allow to reduce the risk to human and environmental health. The objective of this study was to phytoextract metal(loids) from a soil contaminated with mining waste using native trees and shrubs and a commercial crop. The study area is a relevant mining zone located in La Planta, San Juan, Argentina. The most contaminated point has an acidic pH (2.6), highly electrical conductivity (41.2 mS/cm), and high concentrations of several metal(loids): u (131.2 mg/kg Plot 1 and 826.1 mg/kg Plot 2); Zn (5880 mg/kg Plot 1 and 2227 mg/kg Plot 2); As (4789 mg/kg Plot 1 and 2383mg/kg Plot 2); Cd (52.6 mg/kg Plot 1 and 19.3 mg/kg Plot 2). Acute and chronic experiments showed the toxicity caused by the contaminated soil. In field, a high growth rate was observed in native plants after 21 months of exposure and in quinoa crop after the first cycle. High concentrations of Cu, Zn, As and Cd were found in the biomass of quinoa.
