Sustainability Assessment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Integrated in a Biorefinery Concepts Using Spent Coffee Grounds and Orange Peel Residues

Short Introductive summary

This study presents the sustainability assessment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production using oleaginous yeast biomass rich in intracellular microbial oil produced via fermentation from spent coffee grounds (SCGs) and orange peel residues (OPRs). Bio-crude is produced via direct hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of the whole fermentation broth containing the oleaginous yeast. SCGs and OPRs are initially processed within a biorefinery concept for the extraction of value-added products, namely crude phenolic extract, coffee oil and pectins. This study compares the production of SAF by HTL using two different lipid sources, namely oleaginous yeast and microalgae. The methodology for Sustainability Assesment includes Process design, Techno-economic evaluation and Life Cycle Assesment.
