Comparing Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Internal Combustion Vs. Electric Vehicles Using Ethanol-Derived Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Bioethanol isn’t solely limited to light transport; it can play a crucial role in decarbonizing the energy-intensive heavy-transport subsector through vehicles utilizing ethanol-derived hydrogen fuel cells. Therefore, the current study aims to compare the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) between the internal combustion engine vehicles and the electric vehicles using ethanol-derived hydrogen fuel cells. As a methodological approach, the life-cycle GHG of the vehicle cycle and the fuel cycle, Well-to-Wheel (WTW), for both power train types and energy pathways were defined. Results displayed that by substituting internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles using ethanol-derived hydrogen fuel cells, GHG emissions reduced from 2.19 to 0.33 kgCO2-eq per km when the ethanol steam reforming pathway was employed. The analysis of the total energy conversion efficiency, Well-to-Wheel (WTW), revealed that ICEVs and hydrogen-powered vehicles achieved fuel consumption performances of 1.40 km per liter of diesel fuel, and 1.77 km per liter of ethanol (equivalent to 14.20 km per kg H2), respectively, for vehicles without air-conditioning system.

Dr. Beethoven Narváez-Romo is a Mechanical Engineer from University Nacional de Colombia - Medellin, He holds a Master's degree, MBA, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Energy and Fluids) from the University of São Paulo. Currently, He is a researcher in the Research Group on Bioenergy (GBIO) and the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI).
