Pre-Treatment of Brewery Spent Grain in Submerged Fermentation with Aspergillus Oryzae for Biogas Production
Short Introductive summary
Approximately 30% of the malt used in beer production results in solid waste, known as brewery spent grains (BSG). BSG exhibits potential for use in biorefinery processes for the production of energy carriers like CH4 and H2, however, the utilization of lignocellulose in biorefinery processes necessitates a pre-treatment step that disrupts the crystalline structure of lignocellulosic materials. Fungi have been employed in industrial enzyme production for many years, and more recently, enzyme production using BSG as a substrate has been explored. The aim of this work was to promote knowledge about the generation of lignocellulolytic enzymes from BSG as a substrate in submerged fermentation. A hybrid treatment was proposed in combination with an anaerobic phase to generate energy carriers.
