Exploring the Potential of Low ILUC-risk Biofuels in the EU and their Role in Shaping the Future Renewable Energy Landscape

Short Introductive summary

A driving factor behind land use change in EU is represented by biofuel production from energy crops, which often occurs in land previously destined for food and feed production, thus leading to an extension of agricultural lands into areas with high carbon stocks. A promising solution to address ILUC (Indirect Land Use Change) is the development of low ILUC-risk biofuels, considered as renewable energy sources capable of helping decarbonisation of Europe. This study conducted a two-phase assessment to evaluate the potential of low ILUC-risk biofuels across EU, starting from the case studies of BIKE project . The timeframes of 2030 and 2050 were covered. In the first phase, a GIS-based modelling approach has been used to estimate the theoretical production of biofuels. Building on this, the second-phase evaluated the opportunities and challenges linked to a large-scale use of low ILUC-risk biofuels within the European transportation sector, particularly in aviation and maritime sectors.
