Biomass Burning and Air Pollution in Milan: Assessing the Consequences of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict on Air Quality and Toxicity
Short Introductive summary
The ongoing geopolitical conflict between Russia and Ukraine has precipitated a significant energy crisis in Europe. In response, the European Union (EU), facing with reduced natural gas imports from Russia, has encouraged member states to explore alternative energy sources. Italy, in particular, has implemented tax reductions on wood pellets to promote biomass as a residential heating option. This study aims to assess the impact of this policy shift on air quality in Milan, Italy, particularly focusing on PM2.5 concentration and toxicity, a crucial factor for public health.
