Synthetic fuels from biomass and hydrogen
Mapping Available EU bio-CO2 Sources as Feedstock for Methanol Synthesis
Short Introductive summary
The purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive mapping of available biogenic CO2 sources for the production of methanol that could eventually be used as marine fuel. The main investigated sources of biogenic CO2 are biogas, bioethanol, pulp and paper, as well as biomass combustion plants. Additional information is also provided on non-biogenic CO2 sources (such as steelworks and cement plants) as reference cases and for comparison purposes. This work includes indications on the points of generation within the plant, indicative stream compositions, CO2 storage conditions, as well as the yearly availability of the carbon feedstock for MeOH synthesis. The influence of the contained impurities in the sources is assessed, whereas gas cleaning and pre-treatment techniques are proposed to eliminate any poisoning effects on the used methanol synthesis catalysts. The mapping of the different locations of bio-CO2 generation is also included since CO2 generation, hydrogen production and methanol end-use could be in different locations and affect the logistics of the value chain.
