Effective Utilization of an Essential-Oil Industrial Waste for Bio-Oil Production and Wastewater Treatment

Short Introductive summary

Essential oils are indispensable elements of existence, widely recognised for their exceptional therapeutic qualities, such as their capacity to promote slumber and mitigate tension and anxiety via aromatherapy. When natural sources like ginger, turmeric, pepper, fennel seed, and carrots are used to extract essential oils, the leftover solid materials are frequently burned or dumped in landfills, which pollutes the environment. These industrial wastes possess exceptional morphological and lignocellulosic properties which makes it suitable for both bio-oil production via pyrolysis and wastewater treatment by using its raw as well as its biochar form. This study proposes the complete utilization of carrot seed waste (CSW) for bio-oil production and waste-water treatment. In order to assess the organic components and reaction pathways, the biooil samples acquired at various pyrolysis temperatures are further characterised using GC-MS analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The modified CSW-biochar as well as the raw CSW was further utilized to treat cationic organic contaminants from wastewater and later the kinetic studies were performed and compared between both the biomaterials.
