Multiscale Synergy Between Phototrophic Carbon Sequestration and Heterotrophic Carbon Assimilation by Microalgae in Radially-Mixed Bubble-Column Photobioreactors
Short Introductive summary
Gourab is a senior PhD student at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. The current work quantifies phototrophy and heterotrophy synergy in mixotrophic cultivation of Chlorella sorokiniana, demonstrating engineering design strategies can enhance inter-trophic synergy and inorganic carbon sequestration in microalgae. The salient features of the work are as follows: • A method to stratify phototrophic and heterotrophic growth and quantify inter-trophic synergy in mixotrophic microalgal cultivation • Radial mixing promotes CO2 sequestration at super-optimal illumination (14000 lux) • Nitrogen limitation amplifies inter-trophic synergy, especially at high light intensity • Multiscale effects of macroscale parameters (CO2 and nitrogen loading, illumination, radial mixing) on elemental composition and macromolecular synthesis • Deployable in industrial-scale outdoor photobioreactors using acetate-rich wastewater bubbled with CO2-rich flue gases
