Advances in gasification for sythesis gas production
Utilizing Biomass Gasification for Carbon Neutrality in Hyundai Steel’s Hy-Cube Process
Short Introductive summary
Global steel companies are shifting towards hydrogen-based systems to achieve carbon neutrality, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions associated with traditional coal and natural gas production. Although carbon is essential for steelmaking as a reduction agent and for stabilizing processes. Therefore, biomass gas utilization where carbon is needed emerges as a key strategy for carbon-neutral technology. Hyundai Steel focuses on developing Hy-Cube technology, centered on Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), with the goal of using bio-gas as a substitute for carbon. Thorough evaluation of biomass gas composition and optimization of gasification conditions have revealed promising results, with biomass like PKS showing potential for carbon-neutral steelmaking.
