Enzymatic Solutions for Enhanced Hydrolysis of Bioplastics in Anaerobic Digestion Waste Streams
Short Introductive summary
The surge in bioplastic production has created challenges in waste management due to the increased presence of end-of-life bioplastics in organic waste. Enzyme cocktails show promise in aiding the degradation of bioplastics within anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, potentially reducing costs and enhancing biogas production. This study aims to develop tailored enzymatic solutions for bioplastic treatment and recycling, focusing on polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends. Preliminary results demonstrate the efficacy of enzyme cocktails in enhancing bioplastic degradation and biomethane production in AD systems, with recombinant enzymes showing promise even in mixed waste streams. Further research is needed to optimize enzyme use, offering an innovative approach to bioplastic waste management.
