Biorefinery Approach to Convert Crude Glycerol to Single Cell Oils (SCOs) and Carotenoids by Rhodosporidium Toruloides DSM70398

Short Introductive summary

Single cell oils (SCOs) and carotenoids produced through fermentation are versatile biobased intermediates for chemicals and biofuels. Numerous efforts have been made to enhance the efficiency of the production process versus different feedstocks. Within the realm of yeasts, the genus Rhodosporidium is recognized for its ability to produce various carotenoids. Recent years have seen increased interest carotenoids due to their heightened antioxidant properties, as well as their antimicrobial and antitumoral activities and numerous studies have illustrated the feasibility of producing carotenoids from cost-effective substrates. In this study, the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides DSM70398 (previously R. glutinis DSM70398) was investigated for its ability to convert raw glycerol into SCOs and carotenoids. The fermentation set-up was optimized in shaken flasks by using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A 3-level Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed to investigate the impact of crude glycerol concentration, C/N ratio and temperature on SCOs and carotenoids yields. Ammonium sulfate was tested as N source.
