Investigation of Pretreatment Techniques to Improve Anaerobic Digestion of Unused Biomasses in Korea

Short Introductive summary

Korea has implemented a policy aimed at finding and utilizing unused biomasses for energy production. This study selected several unused biomasses, such as slaughterhouse and agricultural wastes, to apply to an anaerobic digester to produce methane gas. The characteristics of these unused biomasses, such as total solids (TS), volatile solides (VS), and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), were measured and investigate the potentials of these biomasses for methane production. To enhance the anaerobic digestibility of the biomasses, pretreated samples were prepared through either ball-milling or hydrothermal treatment. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out to investigate the effects of pretreatments. The pretreatments used in this study improved methane production and reduced solids retention time. This study explore how unused or alternative biomasses can be embedded into an energy system by applying to anaerobic digestion processes.
