Exploration of Operating Conditions for Enhanced Building Block Concentration in the Liquor Produced from Urban Pruning Hydrothermal Carbonization
Short Introductive summary
A significant portion of my doctoral thesis revolves around the conversion of urban pruning biomass into molecules of interest, with a priority on furfurals and phenols. This is achieved through a Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) process. The innovation lies in utilizing urban pruning waste that typically ends up in municipal landfills. Through HTC, a solid product (hydrochar) is produced with improved characteristics suitable for heating or energy use. Simultaneously, the liquid product (liquor) is utilized due to its high content of chemically relevant molecules in today’s context. The focus of my work involves the operational conditions of the HTC process, including time, temperature, pH, biomass:water ratio, and particle size. These factors are highly relevant as they influence the production of specific furan and/or phenolic compounds of significant commercial interest today (e.g., 5-HMF, Phenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol). This work shifts the focus of HTC studies by promoting the liquid product, thereby enhancing the potential for the process to be used in the development of a profitable biorefinery design.
