Resource efficiency in biomass chains and strategic assessment of market opportunities
The State-of-Art And Potential of Biochar Business in Northern Ostrobothnia
Short Introductive summary
The traditional linear economy model has driven the world into a crisis. Overpopulation, climate change and the scarcity of natural resources have become serious threats to the present-day economy as we understand it. The need for renewable, climate friendly resources has surfaced fast as legislators around the world are trying to find tools for cutting emissions and securing goods for consumers simultaneously. One of the many such tools could be biochar. The aim of this article is to research the role of biochar in the circular economy and state of the art of its commercial production and potential in Finnish Northern Ostrobothnia. The literature review focuses on the first research question, and empirical study answers the second research question. The literature review was conducted by using scientific articles and former research on biochar. The empirical study method was qualitative and contains mainly semi-structured interviews, in addition to one case-study. Key findings were the state of the art of the areal business ecosystem and estimation of its growth potential.
