Multistep Biorefinery Process to Produce Microbial Lipids from Syngas Acetate

Short Introductive summary

In recent decades, gradual industrial development and accelerating energy consumption have led to a rapidly dwindling supply of petroleum fuels [1]. The investigation of other sustainable and renewable energy resources is necessary for the future development of society. The aim of this study was a multistep biorefinery process to produce lipids from acetic acid, a product of syngas fermentation by Clostridium aceticum (DSM1496). In the first instance, the ability of C. clostridium to convert simulated syngas through the Wood-Ljungdahl metabolic pathway was evaluated. The optimization of the bioconversion occurred by testing different gas mixtures and different process conditions. Subsequently, the ability to convert the acetic acid into Single Cell Oils, by three different oleaginous yeast strains, respectively Yarrowia lipolytica, Lipomyces tetrasporus and Trichosporon oleaginosus was assessed. Different carbon concentrations with similar C/N, were studied.

Presenter's biography

My name is Antonio Caporusso and I am an industrial biotechnologist with a Ph.D. in Agricultural, Forestry and Environmental Sciences. I am currently a research fellow at the University of Bari, Aldo Moro. I deal with biorefinery processes and in particular with the bioconversion of residual biomass
