Nutrient and Biogas Potential In Municipal Solid Waste

Short Introductive summary

Improving biowaste collection enhances biogas, soil products, and recycled fertilizers. This study aimed to refine sorting, reduce mixing with other waste, and improve biowaste quality. Focused on a pilot apartment area in Finland, housing about 350 residents, campaigns promoted better sorting, distributing paper biowaste bags. Studies analyzed mixed waste composition before and after the communication campaign. Additionally, the area’s biowaste and mixed waste quantities were tracked from 2020 to 2023. Results showed improvement: biowaste in mixed household waste decreased from 35% in 2020 to 27% in 2021. Separately collected biowaste notably increased by 47% per resident in 2021-2023 compared to baseline year of 2020. On average, 146 kg/person/year of mixed waste and 55 kg/person/year of bio-waste were produced annually. Despite progress, 14 tons of biowaste yearly ended up mixed waste, holding potential for 2,800 cubic meters of biogas. Continuous resident communication remains vital for sustained improvement.
