Advanced biofuels - aviation: gearing up for market deployment

Gearing up for Market Deployment

Short Introductive summary

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will play a critical role in aviation emission reductions required to meet net-zero ambitions by 2050. SAF developments are accelerating with a rapidly growing demand from voluntary commitments and policies. SAF mandates have been adopted in the EU and UK while the US utilizes incentives to meet national targets. Other regions of the world are moving in a similar manner with multiple targets and mandates announced these past years. With legislation in place, deploying SAF capacities is the next hurdle to overcome. Government and industry support is needed to finance and materialize production capacities. Today, HEFA-based SAF is the most widely commercialized pathway which can be used to meet the majority of near-term SAF demand. Meeting long-term demands, however, requires higher-risk production pathways utilizing advanced biomass feedstocks. Bridging investment gaps between different pathways is essential to support the deployment of these higher-risk pathways. This will require the leveraging of financial instruments and establishing good practices for novel feedstock mobilization. In this session, SkyNRG will present (1) its vision for building necessary capacity projects and (2) discuss the necessary support mechanisms from the government and industry to raise investments for these projects. (3) Finally, we need to bridge the investment gap between different technology pathways by supporting the commercialization of higher-risk pathways such as those using advanced feedstocks.

Presenter's biography

Dusita has a background in chemical engineering from Delft University of Technology and work experience in the petrochemical industry on topics of decarbonization. After finishing her Engineering Doctorate in process and equipment design, Dusita joined SkyNRG in 2023. Her role focuses on the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through research on prospective feedstocks and novel SAF production technologies with key areas of interest in pathways using biomass. She is involved in multiple R&D projects on novel SAF production pathways and SAF certification.
