Synthetic fuels from biomass and hydrogen
Comparative Assessment of Low-Carbon Liquid Energy Carriers for Long-Haul Trucking
Short Introductive summary
We present a cost and emissions analysis of five fuels derived from biomass and electrolytic hydrogen as potential solutions to decarbonize long-haul trucks with daily ranges of 965+ km (600+ mi). The fuels under consideration are methanol, methanol-to-gasoline (MtG), Fischer-Tropsch diesel (FTD), ammonia, and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs). Our aim is to guide the trucking industry in its decarbonization efforts and facilitate informed decision-making regarding the best fuel candidates for adoption. Fuel cost is particularly critical for comparison, as it is a major component of the truck’s total cost of ownership. We conduct a system-level analysis of fuel production pathways to determine unit production costs. We develop detailed Aspen process flow sheets to suit scales and operating conditions feasible for today’s conversion technologies. Finally, we provide an outlook on the challenges each fuel faces, including practical implementation, technology readiness of powertrain components, fuel availability, and synergy with other sectors.
